Youth Engagement Programs

Bugardi Ignites Community Spirit through Youth Engagement Programs

Australian turnkey contracting company Bugardi has a mission to create positive social impacts with its commitment to training and developing First Nations People.

One avenue for achieving this is through immersive and empowering community engagement initiatives, three of which have taken place so far this year in the Shire of Ashburton.

Usually spanning five days, Scott Siekierka, Bugardi General Manager, advises that their comprehensive community initiatives create pathways for cultural exploration and education, leading to employment opportunities and fostering growth for youth from ages 10 – 24.

“These initiatives encompass an array of activities designed to cater to diverse interests and age groups.”

From specialist basketball sessions to exhilarating touch rugby and AFL workshops, the programs also include engaging and memorable experiences to the children and young adults in the Shire of Ashburton, igniting their curiosity, broadening their horizons, and nurturing their potential.

A key cornerstone of Bugardi’s community engagement initiative is Indigenous mentoring which plays a vital role in guiding and empowering our youth, Bugardi Director and proud Thalanyji woman Trudy Hayes expresses.

“Part of the mentoring involves the ‘learning on country exploration’, where elders such as myself take our participants on an informative and interactive journey to learn about traditional heritage sites of significance to the Thalanyji culture.”

“This engaging experience not only aims to instill a sense of pride but also deepens the understanding and connection between the community and their ancestors.”

The barbecue is the final activity to close out the programs, and fosters a sense of togetherness and excitement. Families from the community and neighboring areas come together to enjoy a day filled with delicious tucker, entertaining games and activities.

“It’s about ensuring there are pathways – culturally, educationally, and for employment – that allow each person to thrive and flourish,” Scott Siekierka emphasises.

“We are constantly looking for ways to connect to communities through past and traditional means, and that’s where the inclusion of the knowledge holders within the community, the elders and mentoring abilities come into play.”

By providing opportunities to connect with elders and embrace traditional practices, Bugardi ensures the knowledge and heritage of the Thalanyji culture are passed down to future generations.

International Women's Day

International Women's Day 2023 Q&A - Trudy Hayes | Director

1 .What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
To me, it’s about women from all over the world sharing experiences, knowledge, language, cultures, and ways of life. I used to work for the Well Women’s Centre which aimed to enhance women’s lives positively through a range of health and wellbeing programs which was a great platform to meet so many women from all walks of life. International Women’s Day is about empowering each other.

Women are the heart of families, what we give to those around us, it all spreads. We are the compassion of the world.

Women are the heart of families, what we give to those around us, it all spreads. We are the compassion of the world.

2. In a male-dominated industry, how do you challenge inequality and gender bias in the workplace?
Double it. Double the work ethic. Double the expectation.

Being an Indigenous woman, our citizenship rights weren’t given to us until 1946, meaning we’ve had a short amount of time to be part of the bigger decision-making process. I’ve had to work a lot harder and prove my rights.

I’m a big supporter of women leading their way in any industry, but you must command a presence from the moment you walk into the room. Non-verbal communication is a valuable tool but a hard one to master.

Having to fight for rights since I was born, it taught resilience. It reassured me that we are survivors, and I know we paved the way for the future generation.

3. What advice would you give to your 10-year-old self, knowing what you know now?
Never give up. My mother was a strong and independent woman, she instilled strength in us. She always said to us, “to be a leader, do your research, build on the knowledge that’s handed down to you and keep going.”

International Women's Day 2023 Q&A - Tracey Huckerby | People & Culture

1. What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
Where I grew up in Port Hedland, it was never celebrated. Since moving to Perth, I really value the fact that it’s so recognised. It’s a positive day to celebrate women and their achievements. In a world where men are constantly praised, are put forward first in professional endeavours and are more regarded, International Women’s Day allows the world to pause for a moment and reflect on the amazing impact women have on the world and commemorate them.

2. In a male-dominated industry, how do you challenge inequality and gender bias in the workplace?
Making sure my voice is heard, speaking on what I believe is right and staying strong in my words.

I have endured racism and inequality throughout most of my life. Back then I felt speechless, unable to bring myself to stand up against those who are uneducated and thoughtless.

I’ve worked hard to get to a mindset where I’m able to make people accountable for their actions. Those past experiences shaped me. I never want to make others feel how I’ve felt so I feel incredibly passionate about ensuring that our policies look after our people and make them feel valued for their work ethic rather than the ‘titles’ you’re born with.

We have great morale here, especially in management which ultimately sifts down to the rest of our team. The comradery is welcoming and something I’m proud to be a part of.

3. What advice would you give to your 10-year-old self, knowing what you know now?
When someone tells you that you can’t do it, continue to do it and prove them wrong.

International Women's Day 2023 Q&A - Melisha Hardy | T.A. Roof Plumbing

1. What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
It means inclusivity, recognition and being awarded equal opportunity based on your skills and abilities.

2. In a male-dominated industry, how do you challenge inequality and gender bias in the workplace?
I’m a hands-on person and love the work that we do. My goal is to improve every day, continue to strengthen my skills and prove it to myself. At the end of the day, the bosses can see that. I ask questions if I need help and I listen when I must. I’m no different to anyone else, so I demand that I don’t get treated differently.

3. What advice would you give to your 10-year-old self, knowing what you know now?
Push your beliefs and keep working.
